The first strawberries of the season started showing up a few weeks ago in the local grocery stores and, while they’re trucked in from farms in California and aren’t nearly as sweet and tasty as the ones that come from closer to home during peak strawberry season, I still can’t resist buying some every week. Making “pre-season” strawberry desserts gives me more practice for when the real deal starts showing up in the produce section, or at least that’s my justification.

Sweet potatoes are often associated with autumn and Thanksgiving, but I happily eat them all year long. Besides tasting great, they’re also packed with healthy nutrients like magnesium, Vitamin C, and beta carotene. Sweet potatoes: they do a body good. Please don’t sue me, National Dairy Council!

Cheesecake is one of those desserts that’s far too decadent for me to eat on a regular basis, but every once and a while I just need to have a piece. I actually didn’t eat cheesecake much, if at all, until several years ago when I tried a piece from that oh so popular mall chain with the 5000 page menu. After that, I realized that cheesecake didn’t have to be as dense as a brick and sit in your stomach for what felt like days after consumption, and I started eating indulging more regularly.

The February issue of Gourmet has a recipe for orange polenta cake, and the accompanying photo was enough for me to get a mean polenta cake craving. I’ve actually been looking for an excuse to make some sort of polenta/cornmeal cake, so this recipe served as a perfect reminder.

This year was my third annual attempt at making a great apple cider donut. I’ve tried four recipes over the past two years and haven’t been satisfied with the results. Maybe I just don’t know what an apple cider donut should taste like, but I want at least some apple flavor in the finished product, and no recipe that I’ve tried has given me that. I’ve always ended up with somewhat dry, not apple-y at all donuts, most of which have been tossed in the trash. And it really pains me to throw out food, especially donuts.
