About

  • I'm Kristen, a clumsy but determined home cook and crafter living in the Boston area with my husband, B, and I have an interest in all things food and craft.

This blog was created to keep track of my various projects and adventures. They may not all be successes, but my goal is to remain unintimidated by whatever engages my curiosity.

Shrimp Curry with Coconut Rice

These days, I order most of my spices from Penzey’s, and a big thank you to Alton Brown and Good Eats for introducing me to this place. Penzey’s has pretty much every spice you can imagine, and I can really taste the difference between the quality in their spices and those that I pick up at the grocery store. I also appreciate the great prices that they have on bulk spices like ground ginger, cinnamon, and chili powder, which I seem to use by the bucketful.

Gluten Free Buttermilk Biscuits

Now that you’ve made your own sweet, sweet jam, wouldn’t you love to slather it on a warm and fluffy biscuit with some butter? These biscuits have been a long time in the making and, when I say a long time, I mean over a year and a half of experimenting with the recipe, using every type of gluten free ingredient imaginable, and having several results that weren’t exactly edible. I’ve learned a lot about making gluten free biscuits along the way.

Dairy Free, Sugar Free Ice Cream

A few years ago, I bought my first ice cream maker. My head was filled with fantasies of making my own custom ice cream, flavored in any wild and wonderful way that I could imagine. My wild and wonderful custom ice cream ideas came crashing down when I discovered that, after an overnight session in the freezer, my ice cream was as hard as a block of ice. Like, a you-need-an-ice-pick-to-get-into-it hard.

Rosemary Thyme Oven Fries

I love potatoes. Mashed, fried, baked, sweet, or however you want to prepare them. Put a potato in front of me, and I’ll find something to do with it.

Gluten Free Sugar Free Whoopie Pies

You didn’t think that I’d leave you hanging with a recipe for luscious buttercream and nothing on which to slather it, now, did you? Well, I guess I did leave you hanging for a few days, but I’m here today to tell you all about the most incredible whoopie pies (aka gobs) that I’ve ever eaten. I’m not speaking in hyperbole, either. These things were awesome, better even than the gluten and sugar-filled version, in my opinion, anyway.

Mixed Berry Crisp

Crisp, crumble, buckle, grunt, cobbler…I’m getting better at knowing what’s what, but this is a confusing food genre. No matter, I’ve come to love them all, which is something that I would never have thought I’d be saying if you asked me a few years ago.
